Resident Evil: Retribution | 2012
Resident Evil: Retribution
Resident Evil: Retribution picks up immediately after the events of the previous film. Alice has just defeated Albert Wesker and, feeling relieved, is suddenly ambushed by a squad led by Jill Valentine, who has been brainwashed by Umbrella. A battle ensues, and Alice is caught in an explosion, falling into the sea and losing consciousness. The opening scene of the film rewinds this moment, showing it again in a unique manner.
When Alice wakes up, she finds herself in a suburban house, now living as a housewife with a husband and daughter. As she tries to protect them, zombies invade, and in the chaos, her husband is attacked. Alice and her daughter flee the house, and after a car accident, they end up hiding in a nearby house. Alice tries to protect her daughter, but ultimately, her husband, now zombified, kills her.
After regaining consciousness, Alice is interrogated by a brainwashed Jill in a secret facility, but shortly after, the facility is hacked, allowing Alice to escape. She finds and dons her iconic suit.
While trying to find an exit, Alice unexpectedly ends up in the middle of Tokyo at night, where she arms herself with a chain and a gun taken from a police car. Amidst the chaos caused by zombies, Alice fights her way through the streets, escaping through an exit.
In the control room, Alice meets Ada Wong and learns from a hologram of Wesker that she was freed because he needs her. The facility is actually an experimental base where simulations of various cities, including New York, Tokyo, and Moscow, were set up, and clone humans were injected with memories and released to recreate a zombie apocalypse. Wesker reveals that Umbrella triggered the global arms race through biochemical weapons. Alice's family life was actually a simulation, and she was a clone used for these experiments.
While escaping, Alice and Ada discover a clone of Alice’s daughter, Becky, and Alice, driven by maternal instincts, decides to take her. Despite Ada's objections, Alice takes Becky with her. During their escape, they are confronted by Jill and Umbrella’s forces. Ada sacrifices herself so Alice and Becky can escape.
In Moscow, Alice's group runs into trouble with Russian zombie soldiers and a giant Licker. Just as things look bleak, Alice arrives in a Rolls-Royce to help them escape, defeating the Licker in the process. Afterward, Becky and Rain, who is also a clone, join up with them.
They reach the escape elevator, but the Licker, now alive, kills the Rain clone and kidnaps Becky. Alice fights her way through Umbrella’s soldiers and manages to rescue Becky after a battle. With the facility’s self-destruct timer counting down, Alice and the survivors escape, but they are pursued by Jill and the Rain clone soldiers. Alice and her team confront these enemies, and in a final showdown, Alice defeats the Licker and saves her daughter.
The film ends with Alice and the survivors meeting Wesker in the White House. Wesker injects Alice with the T-Virus again and asks for her help to save humanity. The film concludes with the survivors fighting off a horde of zombies, as the future remains uncertain.
Though it was filled with action and thrilling moments, Resident Evil: Retribution lacked coherent storytelling and depth, continuing the series' trend of over-the-top action and plot holes. Still, it provided an entertaining experience for fans of the franchise.
