Zombie Apocalypse | 2009

Zombie Apocalypse is an action-shooting game developed by Nihilistic Software and published by Konami. Its sequel, Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone, was released in 2011.

The game is a multidirectional shooter where the player controls one of four characters through 55 levels across seven different areas. The player must rescue survivors and kill waves of zombies using various weapons and the environment. Using the environment for kills rewards the player with more points. Every five kills increase the score multiplier, which resets to one upon death. Each game mode can be played in single-player or multiplayer. There are 12 trophies/achievements to unlock, and new modes are available as the game progresses.

Nihilistic aimed to create a pure arcade shooter, drawing inspiration from Robotron 2084 and Smash TV. The environments and characters were designed based on zombie films like Night of the Living Dead and Return of the Living Dead.

The game received "mixed or average" reviews on both platforms. IGN stated that "Zombie Apocalypse is inconsequential," while GameSpot described it as "Robotron: 2084 with zombies... it lacks innovation but makes up for it with good, mindless fun." Destructoid praised the variety of zombies in the PS3 version but pointed out that "by the 25th night, you've pretty much seen them all." However, 1Up.com criticized the repetition, difficulty, and lack of enemy variety, stating, "Worse than simply being tedious, Zombie Apocalypse becomes frustratingly difficult as it goes on."
