SIREN 2 | 2006
SIREN 2
Overview
SIREN 2 is the second installment in the SIREN series, released in 2006. The original title "SIREN" and the localized title "死魂曲" could have been translated as either "Siren 2" or "Shikon-kyoku 2," but for some reason, it was released in Korea as "Shikon-kyoku 2: Siren." In contrast to the time-loop storyline of its predecessor, SIREN 2 utilizes the concept of parallel worlds to craft a new narrative. The two possible endings are set in separate realities, with the second ending being the canonical story that the creators have confirmed. The events in the first ending are considered to occur in an alternate world.
Gameplay
SIREN 2 introduces a series of improvements and new systems over its predecessor:
Plot: The stories in the two endings are independent and not connected. However, the events of Ending Condition 2 are considered the main storyline, and the outcomes for the characters are influenced by what happens in this timeline.
New Enemies: "Shin," "Amryo," and "Amin" are new enemies added to the game.
Game Systems:
- Animal Viewjacking: Unlike previous abilities like "Past Sight" or "Psychometry," this ability is not limited, though it can only be used by Mikami Shu.
- New Features: Driving vehicles, setting traps, and using smoke bombs are some of the new features that were not available in the first game.
- Weapon Use: Players can now push enemies away with their bare hands even without weapons. This technique can be useful for knocking enemies off ledges or disarming them.
- Map: The player's location is now shown on the map, making navigation easier.
- Weapons and Ammo: New automatic firearms, such as the Type 64 rifle and FN Minimi, are introduced. NPCs also carry ammunition, and players need to be cautious about discarding weapons, as enemies will reload and attack when they pick up discarded guns.
Difficulty and Improvements
- Difficulty Adjustments: The difficulty has been lowered compared to the first game. Players can now choose between "Easy," "Normal," and "Hard" modes. "Hard" mode is similar to the difficulty of the previous game, so players should be cautious when selecting it.
- Checkpoints: Unlike the first game, where checkpoints were too far apart or nonexistent, SIREN 2 has improved checkpoint placement, making progression smoother.
- Hints: The game now provides hints at the start of each mission, guiding players toward completing objectives. Achieving the second ending has also been made easier, with more guidance on what actions are required.
Characters
- Female characters cannot use rifles and generally have lower physical stats than male characters.
- Self-Defense Force Characters: These characters cannot shoot while sitting, prone, or running.
- Final Weapon: The final weapon is no longer a katana but an "Annaki," a different type of sword. The katana can still be used but only as a finishing weapon.
Overall Evaluation
SIREN 2 is a refined version of its predecessor, addressing many of the original game’s shortcomings. The game now makes it easier to acquire weapons and ammo, which was a significant challenge in the first game. The difficulty is more balanced, allowing for a smoother experience, but it ramps up in the later stages as enemies become more powerful.
Conclusion
SIREN 2 is an improvement over the first game, making it a more accessible entry point for newcomers to the series. While not without its flaws, it provides a more polished experience compared to the original, making it highly recommended for players new to the series.
