Shellshock 2: Blood Trails

Shellshock 2: Blood Trails is a first-person shooter developed by Rebellion Derby and published by Eidos Interactive. It is the sequel to Shellshock: Nam '67 and was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. However, it received very negative reviews from critics.

The story revolves around a special operations team led by Sergeant Caleb "Cal" Walker, who is sent into the jungles of Cambodia to retrieve a mysterious cargo known as Whiteknight, which went missing after a U.S. transport plane was shot down by a North Vietnamese Air Force jet. Cal loses his men to the early victims of Whiteknight, the crew of the downed U.S. plane. Cal himself becomes infected with the virus that he was meant to secure.

One month later, Cal emerges from the jungle alone and is captured, brought to a U.S. base in the Pleiku Highlands. Cal’s younger brother, Private Nathaniel "Nate" Walker, is brought to the base by Sgt. Jack Griffin to extract information from his deranged brother about Whiteknight. However, Cal manages to escape after killing several soldiers during a joint Viet Cong-North Vietnamese Army attack on Pleiku. The attack is orchestrated by Nguyen Van Trang, a VC officer sent to capture Cal.

Nate, with the help of Griffin and the soldiers he meets along the way, must hunt down Cal, traveling from Pleiku to an ancient temple in Cambodia. Nate is also tasked with stopping Nguyen Trang and his comrades from capturing Cal. Throughout his journey, Nate faces off against Whiteknight-infected people, Viet Cong, and North Vietnamese soldiers.

The game received generally unfavorable reviews. According to Metacritic, it scored 40/100 on PC, 35/100 on PS3, and 30/100 on Xbox 360. Review scores include:

  • Eurogamer: 2/10
  • GameSpot: 5.5/10 for PC, 4/10 for console versions
  • GamesRadar+: Negative
  • IGN: 4.6/10
  • VideoGamer.com: 3/10

Shellshock 2: Blood Trails received "generally unfavorable" reviews from critics.

On June 23, 2008, Shellshock 2: Blood Trails was refused classification by the Australian Classification Board due to excessive violence, which could not be accommodated under the highest available rating of MA 15+. The distributor decided not to appeal the decision. For similar reasons, the game was added to the List of Media Harmful to Young People by the German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons, making it illegal to distribute in Germany.
