Hunter: The Reckoning

Hunter: The Reckoning is a hack-and-slash third-person shooter video game developed by High Voltage Software and published by Interplay Entertainment in 2002. The game is based on the tabletop role-playing game of the same name and was released as part of the World of Darkness series. The sequels, Wayward and Redeemer, were released in 2003.

Players take on the role of a hunter and use melee weapons, ranged weapons, and magic to defeat hordes of enemies. The story is set around Ashcroft Penitentiary, a prison that serves as a feeding ground for vampires. The deceased prisoners return as vengeful ghosts, seeking revenge for their deaths.

Interplay decided to develop Hunter: The Reckoning into a video game, believing it would adapt well into an action title. The game was planned to be a major title for the newly released Xbox, leveraging its superior graphic capabilities. It received praise for its gameplay and graphics, but the GameCube version faced criticism for graphical and frame rate issues.

The game features a single-player mode or multiplayer mode for up to four players. Each player controls a different character with unique classes and abilities. Deuce is a vengeful character with powerful strength, Samantha is a balanced defender with speed and power, Father Cortez is a magic-wielding judge, and Kassandra is a fast and powerful attacker. The game has 23 levels set in various locations such as tombs, sewers, prisons, hospitals, mansions, and torture rooms. Each level lasts around 5 to 30 minutes, with objectives like exploring maps, rescuing hostages, escorting NPCs, and finding items.

The story is set in the World of Darkness universe in the town of Ashcroft, a prison town where vampires have been feeding on prisoners for 50 years. The prison warden transforms into a vampire, and the tortured and experimented-on prisoners return as vengeful ghosts, starting to destroy the town.

The game was released for the Xbox in North America on May 21, 2002, and the GameCube version was released on November 19, 2002. It was released in Europe on July 5, 2002, and the Xbox version was later made compatible with the Xbox 360 in November 2007 and with Xbox One in April 2018.

The game received generally positive reviews, though the GameCube version was rated more average due to graphical and frame rate issues. The combat and gameplay were praised, with multiplayer mode especially receiving positive feedback. However, some critics found the single-player mode to be repetitive and somewhat lonely, and camera issues made it difficult to see enemies during combat. There were also complaints about the restrictions on player movement in multiplayer mode.
