Wild Zero | August 8, 1999
"Wild Zero" is a 1999 Japanese comedy horror film directed by Tetsuro Takeuchi. The film features the Japanese rock power trio Guitar Wolf, with Masashi Endō playing the role of Ace. Ace helps the group, and the vocalist, named after the band, makes him a blood brother and gives him a whistle to blow in times of danger. Later, Ace meets Tobio during a gas station robbery, and the group finds themselves in the midst of a zombie outbreak.
After a meteorite falls in Asahi, the power trio Guitar Wolf holds a concert. After the performance, the band confronts their manager, Captain, and Ace overhears Captain declaring that rock music is outdated. Ace rushes into the room, causing Guitar Wolf to shoot Captain's hand. Guitar Wolf makes Ace a blood brother and gives him a whistle to blow in times of danger.
One day, Masao, Hanako, and her boyfriend Toshi stop at a gas station on their way to see the fallen meteorite. Masao attempts to rob the gas station but is interrupted by the arriving Ace. Masao, Hanako, and Toshi leave, and Ace meets the shy Tobio before departing. Along the way, he discovers a vehicle being eaten by zombies and decides to return to the gas station to protect Tobio. Meanwhile, Masao, Hanako, and Toshi stop near a lake, where Masao is killed by a zombie.
Ace returns to the gas station and rescues Tobio from a horde of zombies. They escape to an abandoned building, where they share a kiss. Tobio reveals to Ace that he is transgender, causing Ace to scream and flee to another room. There, he sees a vision of Guitar Wolf, who tells him, "Love knows no borders, nationality, or gender." Ace realizes that zombies have entered the building and blows the whistle given to him by Guitar Wolf. Hearing the whistle, Guitar Wolf heads to their location. Ace begins to fight off the zombies using a crowbar, while Tobio goes outside and sees an alien spaceship in the sky.
Guitar Wolf is stopped by Hanako and Toshi on the road, and they join Guitar Wolf. They head to the gas station where Ace was last seen and soon meet arms dealer Yamazaki. Guitar Wolf uses laser-like guitar picks to eliminate the zombies surrounding Yamazaki. The group visits Yamazaki's weapons stash, where Toshi is bitten by a zombie. As the alien spaceship flies around the world, Guitar Wolf sets off to find Ace again. Toshi turns into a zombie, and Yamazaki shoots the bitten Hanako. Bass Wolf and Drum Wolf's car is surrounded by zombies, but Guitar Wolf continues onward, with Yamazaki following in a military vehicle.
Guitar Wolf rescues Ace from the horde of zombies. Ace expresses regret for not being with Tobio and receives a handgun from Yamazaki before riding off on a motorcycle. Captain, aided by the zombie Toshi, begins firing grenades at the building where Guitar Wolf and Yamazaki are. Guitar Wolf jumps out of the building as it explodes. After a fight with Guitar Wolf, Captain starts shooting explosive beams from his eyes, and Bass Wolf and Drum Wolf arrive to take him down with a rocket launcher. Meanwhile, Ace searches for Tobio and eventually finds her at the gas station. As Ace and Tobio embrace, the zombie Toshi approaches the undead Hanako, and they share a kiss.
An alien mothership passes over Guitar Wolf and Yamazaki. Guitar Wolf stands atop a building, pulls out his guitar, and uses the neck as a sword to slash at the mothership. The mothership explodes, and all the zombies are neutralized. Ace confesses his love for Tobio, and they share a kiss. After the sun rises, Guitar Wolf gifts Ace a broom, and the band departs. Ace vows never to attend another Guitar Wolf concert but has learned that "love knows no borders, nationality, or gender," and he is determined to be with Tobio.
