Undead | 2003
Undead is a 2003 Australian zombie science fiction comedy horror film written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, featuring Felicity Mason, Mungo McKay, and Rob Jenkins.
After losing her family farm to the bank, local beauty pageant winner Rene (Felicity Mason) decides to leave the small town of Berkeley. Several strange meteors that have fallen nearby turn the local residents into zombies. Rene and other survivors take refuge in the home of Marion (Mungo McKay), a gun enthusiast and alien abduction victim. Marion has a stockpile of firearms and a fallout shelter in the basement, but there was no opportunity to stock up on food or water.
The group goes outside to scavenge but encounters zombies. Marion shoots one zombie in the head and discovers that this is a way to take down the creatures. They abandon the house to retrieve Marion's van from the garage. As they try to escape, they discover a massive barrier surrounding the entire town, which Marion claims is due to aliens. Additionally, slightly acidic rain falls at regular intervals, and the group must be careful not to get wet.
Later, they encounter figures with glowing hoods. The group is picked off one by one or dragged into the clouds, leaving only Rene. The aliens stop her and spray her with a chemical similar to rain, which is revealed to be a cure for the infection. The aliens actually exist to prevent the spread of the zombie infection. The "abducted" individuals are safely preserved in a suspended animation state above the clouds. Once their mission is complete, the aliens leave, and Wayne (Rob Jenkins), who was thought to be dead, escapes in a plane, unaware that he will spread the infection after they depart.
The townspeople are rushed to the hospital to treat the injured. Unfortunately, Wayne turns into a zombie and first infects Marion before spreading the epidemic again.
The film ends at Rene's farm, where the survivors are staying. The final scene shows the farm and the surrounding fenced area, which includes the zombie residents of Berkeley. Rene is seen wearing a shotgun with four barrels and a gas mask, waiting for the return of the aliens.
