Quarantine

"Quarantine" (2008) is a found-footage horror film directed by John Erick Dowdle, with producers Sergio Aguero, Doug Davison, and Roy Lee. It is a remake of the 2007 Spanish film "Rec", starring Jennifer Carpenter, Jay Hernandez, Columbus Short, Greg Germann, Steve Harris, Dania Ramirez, and others.

The movie follows journalist Angela Vidal and her cameraman Scott Percival as they cover a night shift at a Los Angeles fire station. They respond to an emergency call at an apartment building, where they discover that a mutant strain of rabies is spreading among the residents. As the virus spreads rapidly, the authorities and CDC quarantine the building, trapping everyone inside. Angela and Scott continue recording the unfolding events, fighting for survival.

Filming began in January 2008 and wrapped up in March, with the movie shot in downtown Los Angeles. It was filmed in real-time, with scenes typically shot in 4 to 6-minute segments to maintain the intensity of the situation. Quarantine was released in the United States on October 10, 2008, by Sony's Screen Gems. On its opening day, it topped the box office, grossing $5.37 million, and went on to earn a total of $41.3 million worldwide, far surpassing its production budget of $12 million. A sequel, Quarantine 2: Terminal, was released in 2011.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 56% approval rating based on 86 reviews, with an average rating of 5.6/10. The consensus reads, "Quarantine stands out among recent horror films with its effective atmosphere and consistent scares." On Metacritic, it scored 53/100, indicating "mixed or average reviews." Janet Maslin of The New York Times praised the solid performances and well-executed shocks. Bloody Disgusting gave it 3.5/5 stars, noting its "studied portrayal of claustrophobia," while Fangoria gave it 3/4 stars, calling it "an acceptable alternative to the original." However, Empire criticized the rushed style and recycled dialogue. Dread Central's Paul Nicholls gave it 1.5/5 stars, citing the shaky camera and pacing as drawbacks. Variety's Joe Leydon described it as "occasionally interesting, but too faithful to its central concept, leading to less-than-ideal results."

While Quarantine shares the basic premise with the original "Rec", there are several key differences, including the character development, dialogue, and the explanation of the virus. Notably, the religious themes and elements present in "Rec" were omitted in Quarantine. Jaume Balagueró, co-writer and director of the "Rec" series, expressed dissatisfaction with Quarantine, saying, "It's a copy, so it's impossible to enjoy it. Apart from the ending, it’s exactly the same." The film may not have resonated with fans of the original "Rec", but Paco Plaza mentioned that Quarantine helped "Rec" gain more international attention, especially in the U.S. market, where a Hollywood remake was a significant news story.
