Mutant is a 1984 American horror film. It was initially released in theaters under the title Night Shadows, but became known as Mutant after its video release, and has retained this title in all subsequent re-releases.

The film was released in the 1980s in CED format and later on DVD by various distributors. DVDs were released in widescreen format by Elite Entertainment and Genius Products under license from Liberation Entertainment. In the UK, the DVD was released by Hollywood DVD, and on April 2, 2007, Boulevard Entertainment released a region-free Blu-ray without special features. In 2016, the American company Code Red Films released a limited edition Blu-ray restored in 4K. This limited edition included special features such as on-camera interviews with actors Bo Hopkins and Lee Montgomery, audio commentary by Lee Montgomery, Igo Kantor, and director John Bud Cardos, and the original theatrical trailer. The film was also included in the "200 Tales of Terror" DVD set released by Mill Creek Entertainment.

The film begins with brothers Josh and Mike, who are on vacation in the South, being chased by Al and his friends, losing their way, and arriving in a small town where the residents are suffering from a strange illness. They meet Sheriff Will and spend the night at a bed and breakfast. However, that night, Mike is dragged away by something and disappears.

Josh, searching for his brother, meets a school teacher named Holly, who helps him. They suspect that the strange events in the town are connected to a chemical plant and begin to investigate. Josh and Holly eventually discover that toxic substances from the plant are turning the townspeople into mutants.

In the end, Josh, Holly, and Sheriff Will fight the mutants to protect the town. Amidst various crises, they manage to defeat the mutants and uncover the truth behind the events. However, the film ends with news that the chemical company is starting a new facility elsewhere.

The film embodies typical elements of 1980s horror movies, reflecting the popular theme of mutations caused by toxic waste in the horror genre of that era.
